A woman (named), 36, was airlifted from Imane in the Markham District, of Morobe Province,
after suffering a severe bush knife injury to her abdomen.
The incident, believed to be a case of gender-based violence, left her in critical
condition with visible intestinal damage. At the time of medevac, the Imane Health Centre was without staff and there was no health worker available to assist her.
A distress call was made to Goroka Radio FM, prompting MAMA Foundation to mobilize a medevac team on October 31st to pick up the woman.
A skilled medical team, including German Dr. Simon Ganal and Sr. Glendah Walker,
responded to the emergency. The team faced a challenging situation, as the patient's
condition was deteriorating rapidly.
"The patient had a traumatic bowel prolapse and a critical bowel condition," said Dr.
Ganal. "She needed immediate surgical intervention to prevent further complications."
The team monitored and stabilized her condition during the flight and upon arrival at
Angau Hospital in Lae. They worked tirelessly to prepare her for emergency surgery.
"We stayed with the patient at the emergency department until the full emergency team arrived and took over," said Sr. Walker. "It was a team effort, and we're grateful to everyone involved in saving her life."
The woman underwent a bowel resection surgery and is currently recovering at
Angau Hospital.
