A POLICEMAN was shot and wounded in a shootout with armed criminals in Madang’s Ramu on Monday, Northern commander assistant commissioner Peter Guinness says.

“One of the criminals was shot dead and another was injured and is being treated in Walium Health Centre,” he said.

Guinness said the shootout occurred on Asas One Lane Bridge along the Bruce Jepchot Highway.

“The policemen from Northern Mobile Group headquarters and MS 13 members were travelling in a convoy to Madang when they confronted the armed men who were blocking the road and collecting money from motorists.

“First Constable Lazarus Michael, who was in the second vehicle, got out and walked towards the men.

“When the armed men saw him, they fled to the river bank and ran into the bush.

“Michael tried to see them when he was shot and wounded. When the policemen, who where on the other vehicles heard the gun shot, and seeing one of their comrades falling on the ground, they all ran after the armed criminals,” he added.

Guinness said several shots were fired and one armed man was shot dead and the others were wounded.

“Policemen who went after the armed men confirmed that the man fired shots at them but no one was hurt except for Michael.
