Three back-to-back Medevac Missions for Morobe in 8hrs

pr0899

January 25th was a busy day for our medevac team. Pilot Jan, Medevac Nurses Audrey and Naomi did non-stop medevacs rescuing two surviving triplet, a mother with postpartum hemorrhage, and a young girl with a knife stuck to her head.

A young unbooked mother gave birth to a triplet three days earlier, back at her remote Ipang Village, in Tewai Siassi. Unfortunately, the third triplet passed on, the first and second survived for three days, fighting for their lives. Both had congenital malformation and low birth weight, which means they need to be hospitalized at a special care nursery immediately.

When presented at Etep Rural Hospital on January 25th, an urgent medevac request was required, as the hospital was unable to provide the care the surviving triplet need. Both newborn were flown to Lae that same day and admitted at the special care nursery at ANGAU Hospital.

Straight after the triplets, another medevac call out from Finongan Village, along the border of Nawaeb and Huon Gulf Districts. The mother just delivered her baby, and had retained placenta and was bleeding heavily.

Naomi and Jan picked her up at the Primary School where we usually land. She was lucky to have been transferred because of the second degree tear, which can only be stitched at a proper hospital setting.

Whilst they were returning, Audrey was assessing another medevac request, an 8 year

old girl at Kaintiba had a knife stuck in her skull. An accident caused by her playful sibling.

Health workers at Kaintiba Health Centre feared brain damage if anything goes wrong. The only way was a medevac to a urban hospital for X-Ray and proper removal.

The quick response saw the immediate transfer of the child out to ANGAU Hospital.

The team responded swiftly and safely to the emergencies, and were praised by health workers later on that day.
